Conchology. William Swainson (1789-1855) Exotic Conchology; or figures and descriptions of rare, beautiful, or undescribed Shells, drawn on stone from the most select specimens; the descriptions systematically arranged on the principles of MM. Cuvier and de Lamarck, with references to the Linnaean classification. London: Richard & Arthur Taylor for William Wood and J. & A. Arch, 1821 [plates watermarked 1820-1821]. Volume I, parts 1-4 bound in one (all published), large 4° (288 x 233mm). Collation: a 4, B 4 (-B4), (Title (imprint on verso), pp.[iii]-iv 'Advertisement', pp.[1-10] of 12 text). 32 hand-coloured lithographic plates by Swainson, manuscript titles or part titles to five plates. (Lacking B4 ?final leaf of text, occasional light spotting to plates.) 20th-century green half morocco gilt, gilt edges. FIRST EDITION OF 'ONE OF THE RAREST AND MOST BEAUTIFULLY ILLUSTRATED WORKS ON SHELLS EVER PUBLISHED' (S. Peter Dance Shell Collecting An Illustrated History 1966, p.125). No copy of this edition is listed by ABPC as having sold at auction in the last 25 years. Swainson was a zoological artist of the first order 'combining accuracy with artistic skill' ( DNB ). In an effort to reach a wider audience, he learnt the relatively new art of lithography in order to provide images for his Zoological Illustrations (1820-1823). Encouraged by the success of the early numbers of this work, Swainson began the issue of the present work but no more than the present four parts of the first edition were ever published. A re-issue was published in 1834 with an additional 16 plates, and a second edition, edited by S.Hanley, also with 48 plates, appeared in 1841. The plates include images of shells from the collections of a number of well-known contemporary shell collectors, including Elizabeth Bligh (1752-1812), Henry Constanyine Jennings (1731-1819), Charles Dubois Mrs Angus, John Mawe and W.J. Broderip, as well as shells from the collection of author. BM (NH) V, p.2054 (incomplete copy only); Dance Shell Collecting 284; Nissen ZBI 4049.
