GRYPHIUS EXCUDEBAT, 1548. 2 parts in 1 vol. in-8° : [56]-496-[48], 119 pp. (light dampstains, some large or darker, one marginal tear, stains, some pp. slightly yellowed, rare handwritten notes in the margins). Contemporary binding : vellum with visible sewing, flat spine, ties (stains and dampstains, small holes or wormholes, ink notes on the boards, ties partly lacking, long handwritten notes in Italian on the flyleaves).
RARE EDITION of the commentary on the works of Caesar edited by the archaeologist and architect from Verona Giovanni Giocondo (1433-c. 1515) who designed the Palazzo del Consiglio for Maximilian I in Verona and built the Pont Notre-Dame in Paris (rebuilt in 1853). Illustrated with 5 wood-engravings figuring fortified cities or parts of their fortifications (Marseille, Bourges, Alesia, Uxellodunum), the first representation of the bridge accross the Rhine built by Caesar and with 2 maps on double pages (Gaul and Spain). The second part is composed of notes by the Swiss humanist and poet Henricus Glareanus (1488-1563) on the Gallic and Civil wars relations by Caesar. Text decorated with historiated initials figuring mostly cherubs and with 3 marks of Gryphius. # USTC 817498; # not in Adams, Machiels, Soltész, STC Italy, Dibdin. -- Rare édition des commentaires de Giovanni Giocondo sur les oeuvres de Jules César et des notes d'Henricus Glareanus sur la Guerre des Gaules et la Guerre civile.
