Latin half-title, engraved title-page, engraved arms of Huydecoper, engraved arms of Commelin, Latin title-page printed in red and black followed by Dutch title-page printed in black, 112 plates of plants on 110 leaves (plates 42-44 on one leaf), Latin and Dutch text printed in two columns. (Lacking final blank, a few leaves with mostly marginal stains.) 18th-century cat's paw calf gilt, central large gilt ornament made up of small hand tools surrounded by two double fillets and corner pieces, gilt edges (splitting to upper joint, light wear to corners). Provenance : The Warren H. Corning Collection Horticultural Classics (bookplate). FIRST EDITION . Jan Commelin was the director of the Amsterdam Physic Gardens. "The first volume, on the plants of the East and West Indies, [this] was [his] most important contribution to botanical knowledge; it was brought out posthumously by his nephew Caspar. The second volume was by Caspar Commelin and contained an enlargement on some of the notes in Jan's book, with further notes on African plants. The original paintings...were mainly the work of Johan and Maria Moninck and may be seen in the Library of the Hortus Botanicus in Amsterdam" (Hunt).
