Augsburg: Erhard Oglin & Georg Nadler, 22 May 1508. Folio (298 x 210 mm). 36ff. [2], 32, [2] ff. Roman types. Side-notes. Xylographic title at head of a full-page woodcut by Hans Burgkmair repeated on the verso. 20th-century half shagreen & marbled boards. Condition : a few side-notes shaved, some wormholes, occasional soiling. Acquisition : sale, Swann Galleries, 30 November 2000, lot 78A, $1,300 first edition . A drama in verse in 14 acts, Stamler's work treats the religions of the Tartars, Turks, Saracens and Jews. The marginal commentary points out various heresies. Columbus and Vespucci are mentioned in the prefatory letter from Stamler to Jacob Locher, dated 1506 (f. 3v): "I do not make mention of the newly discovered islands: But I send for you to see the treatises of Christopher Colom and Albericus [sic] Vespucci (to whom our age is greatly indebted) on the new world discovered." The large woodcut by Hans Burgkmair shows a seated female figure representing the Church with the globe as a footstool; she sits in front of a tent, surrounded by banners of the Papacy and the Empire. Before her kneel the Pope and Emperor and on a lower step sit four queens representing the four false religions, each bearing a banner with a broken staff. Below them are the figures of the various disputants who take part in the dialogue. Stamler's arms and initials appear in the lower left and Burgkmair's initials in lower right. The author was parish priest at Kissingen in Bavaria. European Americana 508/19; Sabin 90127; Church 26; Shaaber S552; Hollstein V: 68.81; Muther 858.
