Colnett sailed with Cook on his third voyage and later opened the South Pacific sperm whale fields for the King George's Sound Company, called twice at the Galapagos which he charted and mapped, landed on the coasts of Chile, Peru and California, and reached Nootka Sound in 1789 to claim it from Spain and to establish a factory and plant a colony. He was arrested and his ships and cargo confiscated. His release and return to England precipitated the Nootka Sound Controversy. Hill, p. 58. Sabin 14546.
