A Voyage to the South Atlantic and round Cape Horn into the Pacific Ocean, for the purpose of extending the Spermaceti Whale Fisheries, and other objects of commerce, by ascertaining The Ports, Bays, Harbours, and Anchoring Births, in certain islands and coasts in those seas at which the ships of the British merchants might be refitted . London: Printed for the Author, 1798. 4° (320 x 255mm). Engraved portrait, 3 plates and 6 folding maps. Original blue-grey boards (rebacked), tan cloth box. PRESENTATION COPY OF THE FIRST EDITION, inscribed by the author to Captain Temple in Hoseley Bay, 1804. Colnett sailed with Cook on his third voyage and later opened the South Pacific sperm whale fields for the King George's Sound Company, called twice at the Galapagos which he charted and mapped, landed on the coasts of Chile, Peru and California, and reached Nootka Sound in 1789 to claim it from Spain and to establish a factory and plant a colony. He was arrested and his ships and cargo confiscated. His release and return to England precipitated the Nootka Sound Controversy. Hill, p. 58. Sabin 14546.
