Portraits of famous performers were added as a sales technique, often after the initial printing of the song; Sheet music was still the primary way in which melodies were spread in the late 1910s and reflect the changing tides of public sentiment. Much of this sentiment was singularly poignant, with many songs about mothers wishing their sons farewell, and newly minted soldiers promising to return to their lovers.
