Title: Collection of 32 original photographs taken during 1906 San Francisco earthquake and fire Author: Kurtz, Charles M. (1855-1909) Place: San Francisco Publisher: Date: April 18 to June 1, 1906 Description: 32 silver-print photographs showing the aftermath and destruction cause by the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, which struck early morning April 18, 1906. Each captioned in black ink on the bottom margin, including: Ruins of City Hall; Refugee Camp at Tennessee & 18th Sts.; Foot of Market (3rd day of fire looking at the Ferry Building); Looking down O'Farrell from Grant Ave.; View from Rincon Hill; Merch. Exch Bldg., Kohl Bldg.; Ruins of Chinatown; Ruins of Claus Spreckel's Residence; Union Square; Howard Street; Bryant & Brannon; Palace Hotel, Crocker Bldg at New Montgomery St.; Ruins of Acad. of Sciences and Emporium; Hall of Justice; Track on 4th St. distorted; Flames at Corner of Van Ness & Vallejo; "Call" Bldg. in Flames; Mission District, etc. Photos dated April 18 (first day of quake) to June 1 and measure 5x7"; mounted on black paper album leaves, not bound (9½x15½"). Most signed by Kurtz in the lower left corner of the image. Kurtz was a well-known arts administrator, museum direction, collector, dealer and editor. He is best remembered for his editorial work with the National Academy of Design and as the Assistant Chief/Director for the World's Columbian Exposition, the 1900 Paris Exposition, and the 1904 Louisiana Purchase Exposition. Lot Amendments Condition: Most with some fading, occasional spots or stains, slight wrinkling, soiling; else very good or better. An interesting and rare archive of historical original photographs of one of the worst modern natural disasters to hit a major city. Item number: 160715
