Title: Collection of 151 miniature books by Barbara Raheb in a custom revolving case Author: Place: Tarzana / Van Nuys Publisher: Barbara J. Raheb Date: 1977-1980 Description: A spectacular collection of 151 volumes, comprising nearly the entire catalog of the press from 1977 through 1979. Housed in a custom revolving four-sided book case beautifully constructed of leather-covered wood, with four glass-paneled hinged doors, with latched closures (one lacking tasseled chain). The four sides are labeled above the doors: "The Classic Series" (54 volumes), "The Companion Books" (28 volumes), "The Chronicles of Sherlock Holmes" (41 volumes), and "The Cameo Series" (28 volumes). With the door open, there is a small sliding shelf for display of individual volumes (each sliding shelf is shared with the case on the opposing side). One the top is a label reading: Barbara Raheb Miniature Literary Masterpieces. The books are, with very few exceptions, less than 1" in height. The case measures approximately 12¾" in height, and 7½" in width and depth. Case custom made for the Lilliput Oval Saloon. A magnificent collection. Using the list in Robert Bradbury's "Twentieth Century United States Miniature Books" (The Microbibliophile, 2000), the following numbers are present: Bradbury, Raheb 27-32, 34-125, 128, 129, 132, 134-139, 141-160, 162-164, 166-183, 211, 356, 382 (mis-cataloged in Bradbury as 1989, the book is dated 1979). Three titles Fairytales by Hans Christian Andersen (Bradbury, Raheb 28, 29, 30) are hand-colored. Lacking from this nearly consecutive long run of titles is the 1977 printing of the Book of Hours (Bradbury, Raheb 33) of which only 10 were produced, a copy of the 1979 edition (Bradbury, Raheb 113) is present. Also lacking are Clement Moore's Night Before Christmas (Bradbury, Raheb 126), The Poet's Corner, 3 volumes. (Bradbury, Raheb 127), Barbara Raheb's Herbs and Spices (Bradbury, Raheb 130), and her Medieval Life in Pictures (Bradbury, Raheb 131), Anna Sewell's Black Beauty (Bradbury, Raheb 133), and Kate Douglas Wiggins's Birds Christmas Carol (Bradbury, Raheb 140). Of the Arthur Conan Doyle Sherlock Holmes Series, lacking are the four volume set of The Hound of the Baskervilles (Bradbury, Raheb 161) not published until 1981 and The Musgrave Ritual (Bradbury, Raheb 165) however this final title is present in the earlier undated issue (Bradbury, Raheb 103).
