With Observations on the Diet of the Sea-Men in His Majesty's Navy...By W.C. London: for Hugh Newman, 1696. 12 o (148 x 95 mm). Contemporary English blind-ruled calf (joints lightly rubbed). Provenance : F. Nicholls (early ownership inscription on front free endpaper), possibly Dr. Frank Nicholls (1669-1778), famous for his studies of minute anatomy (see DNB); red ink monogram stamp S on front free endpaper. RARE FIRST EDITION OF ONE OF THE FIRST ENGLISH BOOKS ON NAVAL MEDICINE. In this work Cockburn discusses various sicknesses afflicting seamen he encountered during his two years spent as a ship's doctor. Although he did note that fresh vegetables were effective in curing those seamen affliced with scurvy, he argued that the disease attacked the idle and therefore recommends exercise as the best preventative. Cockburn became famous for his secret remedy for dysentery. Garrison-Morton 2147; Wing C-4815; Norman 492.
