Clos de la Roche Vieilles Vignes --Vintage 1962
2 magnums per lot
AN EXCEPTIONAL ARRAY OF THE WORLD'S FINEST WINE The following 178 lots were sourced from what very well may one of North America's most expansive and impressive private collections of wine and certainly one of the finest ever consigned to Christie's. What is remarkable is not the volume of bottles this consignor managed to acquire, but the level at which he collects. Walking through his cavernous cellar, there is not a wine that is not the best of its class. He found the best Bâtard from 1992, the best Tuscan wine from 1997, the best Bordeaux from 1945, the best Burgundies from 1969, the best producer of Musigny, and so on. He collects the best producers in every year, such as Giacomo Conterno, Sine Qua Non and Domaine de la Romanée-Conti. As evidenced by the extraordinary wines on offer in this sale, the consignor loves large formats. Even in a collection such as this where every lot is a marquee lot, certain wines widen the eyes of even the most weathered auction specialist. Methuselah # 8 of Romanée-Conti from the incredible 1971 vintage awaits the Burgundy lover. The five star vintage of 1962 is represented by magnums of Ponsot Clos de la Roche, Romanée-Conti and the rare La Tâche (give 6 stars by Mr. Broadbent), all in magnum. Camille Giroud from the 60s to today is here in magnums and bottles from the best vineyard sites. Lest you are a bidder loving claret, the consignor gives the opportunity to own stunning examples of First Growths from the best vintages of the 20th century. Rare magnums of Château Talbot from the early 50s are an insider's treat. Dueling '61 magnums from Pétrus and Lafleur lead the Right Bank brigade, followed by an imperial of 1982 Lafleur. From Italy, Giacomo Conterno in the rarest of vintages graces these pages, including the arguably the best Barolo ever made: 1958 Monfortino Riserva. California, Champagne, Portugal and even the small volcanic island of Madeira each have delegates that are legendary examples: Harlan, Dom Pérignon, Quinta do Noval Nacional and superb 19th century vintage Malmsey. All wines were sourced with meticulous care from reputable brokers and retailers, many directly from the domaines and estates. They were then immediately brought to the consignor's secure and expansive home cellar. A custom built, state of the art computer system and backup generator maintain a constant temperature and humidity at all times. Selections from this cellar were offered with great acclaim in our November 13th sale and this is but a bit of further pruning to make room for new purchases. Removed by a team of Christie's specialists for this sale. THE INIMITABLE 1962 PONSOT CLOS DE LA ROCHE "From the moment the nose hits you, there is no doubt that this is a superb wine with simply stunnning aromatic complexity that displays layer after layer of nuanced earth, spice, game, secondary fruit and serious depth that is followed by equally nuanced rich and mouth coating flavors that possess outstanding richness and a velvety finish that goes on for several minutes. I particularly like the mouth feel of this wine as the sometimes exuberantly robust character has been tamed by a beguiling combination of time in a bottle and the suavity of the '62 vintage. A great, great example of the vineyard and this is Ponsot at their best. Tasted twice with consistent notes." BH, April 10, 2008 Clos de la Roche Vieilles Vignes --Vintage 1962 Côte de Nuits, Ponsot Levels: both 4cm; gold negociant capsules, Esquin Imports SF strip label on bottle front 2 magnums per lot
