To the President & Directors of the Connecticut Mutual Life Insurance Co. Hartford, Conn. 2pp.+address leaf: About the terms of his life insurance policy, with its “limited sea privilege”: “…I am about to sail for San Francisco in my usual capacity of Ship Master in a first class vessel…I shall either trade for a while in the Pacific ports or return via some other port to Boston…I wish to know of you what your charge would be should I by any chance sell my vessel at California and wish either to reside in that country for a short time or return by the steamboat lines…I am a poor Man and to pay $50 for what I may not want to use I cannot afford…I am a Sailor and earn my money hard…” The 36 year-old Cunningham had been at sea since the age of 17. Four years after the sailed to California, he oversaw construction of the Clipper Ship Ocean Express, a handsome but slow vessel, sailing her twice from Boston around Cape Horn. He retired to his Massachusetts home soon after. Lot Amendments Condition: very good Item number: 247555
