CLEMENS, Samuel L., Theodore ROOSEVELT et al]. Liber Scriptorum. The First Book of the Authors Club . New York: Authors Club, 1893. 2 o . Title-page printed in red and black, woodcut ornaments in the text. Original brown morocco decoratively stamped in gilt and black, gilt-lettered, top edge gilt, others uncut. FIRST EDITION. LIMITED ISSUE, number 211 of 251 copies printed, SIGNED BY ALL 109 CONTRIBUTORS. A lavish anthology containing stories, essays, and poems by contributors such as William Dean Howells, Harold Frederic, Charles Dudley Warner, Frank Stockton, F. Hopkinson Smith, E.C. Stedman, Will Carleton, Andrew Carnegie and others. "The Californian's Tale" by Twain is boldly signed "Mark Twain" on page 161; Theodore Roosevelt's classic hunting account, "A Shot at A Bull Elk," is signed by him at page 487. The preface explains that "the Author's Club...was organized in 1882 for the 'promotion of social intercourse among authors'"; membership was limited to "writers of published books." To raise funds for the purchase of a clubhouse, publication of an anthology was proposed, to which a total of 109 author-members contributed essays. The anthology--a virtual cross-section of the American literary scene of the 1890s--was printed by the De Vinne Press of New York in "the best typographical dress." BAL 3438 (the Twain story); Merle Johnson/Twain, p. 127 (states that over 30 of the 251 copies were not bound, but sold separately). AN UNUSUALLY FINE COPY.
