LETTER FROM MONET TO THAULOW. MONET, CLAUDE (1840-1926), French Impressionist painter. Autograph letter signed (ALS) to Norwegian painter Frits Thaulow, signed with his full name and written on Monet's stationary (Giverny par Vernon), black-bordered paper, dated 20 March (18)99. 1 and 1/2 page in 8vo (160x100 mm). The letter deals with the death of Monet's friend Sisely who left his family impoverished. Monet organized a sale of his works and asked his fellow painters to help the family. He asks Thaulow to send him a confirmation that he will be among the contributors. Frits (Fritz) Thaulow (Christiania, 20 October 1847 - Volendam, 5 November 1906), Norwegian Impressionist painter, best known for his naturalistic depictions of landscapes. In 1892 he moved to France where he stayed until his death. Monet also visited Scandinavia and spent the winter of 1885 in Norway where he met Frits Thaulow. Provenance: The collection of professor Oscar Reutersvärd (1915-2002). Reutersvärd was a Swedish graphic artist, well-known for his so called "impossible figures", he created his first impossible triangle in 1934. He studied for Otte Sköld Fernand Legér and Otto G. Carlsund. Reuterswärd was professor in History of Art in Lund 1964-81. He mentions this letter in his biography on Monet, published in Stockholm 1948. Changes The letter has been folded, second page slightly faded. Brevet har varit vikt och sista sidan med namnteckningen något blekt.
