Lot of 3. Printed handbill, 6 x 9.5 in., bold heading "CONGRATULATORY ORDER FROM GENERAL CUSTER," addressed to the men and officers of the Third Division of Cavalry Corps, dated at their headquarters at Appomattox Court House, VA, April 9, 1865, the day of Gen. Lee's surrender of the Confederate forces. A similar handbill sold at auction in 2011, and was described as being printed in the weeks following the surrender by a Southern printer trying to make money by selling as a souvenir to the occupying Union troops. Signed in type G.A. Custer/ Brevet Major General, though Custer was not awarded that rank until April 15. Custer, Elizabeth B. "Boots and Saddles," or Life In Dakota with General Custer. New York: Harper & Brothers, 1885. 12mo, bound in the publisher's tan cloth covers with stamped black and gilt illustration/lettering, 312pp. Important work by the wife of George Armstrong Custer, containing the tissue-guarded frontispiece portrait of General Custer, plus interior "Outline Map of portions of Montana & Dakota." FFEP ink inscribed to Henry Woodward, and dated August 9, 1885. Shelf wear to binding, with some slight loss/wear to spine, scattered spotting. Interior pages overall very good. The Daily Graphic: An Illustrated Evening Newspaper. New York: Tuesday, August 15, 1876. Vol. XI. No. 1067. 14 x 20 in., 8pp. Featuring large, front page dramatic illustration entitled, "The Right Way to Dispose of Sitting Bull and his Braves. What the Country Expects of General Sheridan." Additional illustrations and articles throughout remainder of issue. Typical folds, some toning along edges, chipping, slight loss along edges. Provenance: Property from the Inventory of Rex Stark Condition: "Boots and Saddles" includes portrait and map; modest wear to the joints but binding sound, Good+.
