FOUR MONTHS AFTER THE EPIC Monitor AND Merrimac BATTLE ERICSSON WRITES OF "THE INEVITABLE DOWNFALL OF ENGLAND AS A GREAT NAVAL POWER" DUE TO HIS NEW INVENTION The historic first battle between iron-clad naval vessels -- the Confederate Merrimac and the Union Monitor -- took place on 8 March 1862 off Hampton Roads, Virginia. The inventor of the Union vessel (which represented a completely new concept of naval design) predicts the end of British naval supremacy: "I wish you would reply to the enclosed [not present], telling your friends that I have not a moment to spare from my arduous duties in connection with the Iron Clads. You can say that I will furnish you with materials for an article on the great revolution in naval warfare resulting from The Monitor and the inevitable downfall of England as a great naval power which means: as a great power at all!..."
