CIVIL WAR, CONFEDERATE APPOINTMENTS]. Two C.S.A. appointments: MALLORY, STEPHEN RUSSELL, Secretary of the Navy, C.S.A. Printed document signed (S.R. Mallory"), Navy Department, Richmond ["Montgomery"] is crossed out in heading], 11 June 1861, 1 page, 245 x 192 mm. (9 5/8 x 7 1/16 in.), careful repair to lower right-hand corner, age-toned , an official, Montgomery, Alabama-printed document of early date, accomplished in manuscript in a florid hand, noting that "The President has appointed" James W. Cook of Fredericksburg, Va., a Lieutenant "in the Navy of the Confederate States." Confederate Naval appointments are rare, especially in good condition -- BRECKINRIDGE, JOHN C., Vice-President U.S.A., Secretary of War, C.S.A. Printed document signed ("John C. Breckinridge"), Richmond, 2 March 1865, 1 page, 4to, 255 x 197 mm. (10 x 7 3/4 in.), on blue paper , fine condition, accomplished in manuscript, notifying R.M. Grinnell (very late in the war) that "The President, by and with the advice and consent of the Senate," has appointed him a Major in the Adjutant General's Department, "in the Provisional Army in the service of the Confederate States"; he is directed to "report for duty with Maj. Genl. Heth's Division Army N. Va." Breckinridge appointments signed as Secretary of War are rare. (2)
