Circle of Joos de Momper the YoungerWinter landscape with horse-drawn wagons in a village near a frozen river
oil on oak panelunframed: 88 x 121.8 cm.; 34¾ x 48 in.framed: 95.8 x 142.1 cm.; 43¼ x 56⅛ in.Condition reportThe panel is cradled and in a stable and flat condition. The paint surface is clean and covered in a modern glossy varnish. There are visible retouchings along an old horizontal crack running the full width of the panel situated approximately 1/3 from the upper margin. There are also retouchings visible along another old horizontal crack located 1/3 above the lower margin. There are minor areas of discoloured retouching visible in the background and in the trees and some of the buildings. There is evidence of well preserved impasto particularly in the whites, the figures and the branches of the trees. There are some signs of slight abrasion in the browns of the sky and landscape and in the distant trees to the right. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals retouching in the aforementioned old splits/cracks of the panel. Also revealed is another repair to a horizontal crack in the lower margin, measuring approx. 8cm from the bottom. There is also scattered retouching in the background and evidence of strengthening in the trees, architectural details and in the darks of the sky. The painting is in overall fair condition.
