THE TABLE OF CONTENTS FOR THE FINAL SECTION OF THE LAST VOLUME OF CHURCHILL'S THE SECOND WORLD WAR , with extensive corrections in the hand of Denis Kelly, a key member of the "Syndicate" that Churchill relied on to ghost write and edit the memoirs. "The memoirs were the work of many hands," David Reynolds writes in his history of the work, "even if Churchill was the presiding genius" ( In Command of History: Churchill Fighting and Writing the Second World War , p.137). Many of the changes here put that genius on display, as the pedestrian "Yalta to Berlin" is altered to "The End of the Grand Alliance." The clunky "Western Strategic Divergences" becomes "The Polish Dispute," and "President Roosevelt's Death" becomes "The Climax: Roosevelt's Death."
