CHURCHILL, Winston S. and ROOSEVELT, Franklin D. Large photograph signed ("Winston S. Churchill" and "Franklin D. THE BIG TWO AT THE FIRST QUEBEC CONFERENCE, where Roosevelt extracted from Churchill a commitment to go ahead with Operation Overlord, the massive Allied invasion of France, by May 1944 (circumstances eventually pushed it back to June). For months, Churchill had been angling for a more active theatre of operation in the Middle East and Southern Europe, but the Americans, eager to open a western front to relieve the pressure on the Soviets, forced a reluctant Churchill to stick to the Overlord plan. The two leaders also came to important agreements about to share their evolving knowledge and technology regarding atomic weapons. Here Churchill extracted from Roosevelt a pledge that the Anglo-Americans would continue to share information but withhold it from the Russians.
