CHURCHILL, Sir Winston Spencer (1874-1965) -- MENU CARD from the Sixth Dinner at the Café Royal, Piccadilly, London, of the Royal Naval Division Officers' Association, held on 15th April 1924. Two khaki card sheets (95 x 174mm) printed in black, detached, signed in red ink by Churchill and in black ink or pencil by Ian Hamilton (1853-1947), C.D. Shute and others. The dinner coincided with Churchill's return to Parliament as an independent following defeat in the 1922 General Election. Ian Hamilton was General Officer Commanding the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force during the disastrous GALLIPOLI CAMPAIGN, which Churchill, as Lord of the Admiralty, had strongly supported. Provenance : Captain S. Wardingly (separate card bearing the RNVR crest with the typed message: "This menu card was given to the Club by S. Wardingly of 53, Battenhall Road, Worcester, who attended the Dinner in 1924, and thought that we might like to keep the menu card as a momento [sic].")
