CHILDREN'S BOOK, AMERICAN]. A Compendious History of the World, from the Creation to the Dissolution of the Roman Republic. Compiled for the use of young Gentlemen and Ladies. Philadelphia: Robert Aitken, 1774. 2 volumes, 24 o (95 x 59 mm). (Piece of margin torn away on G4 in vol. II affecting some letters.) 15 etched plates, including frontispieces. Original mottled green boards, spines with volume number and slight decoration in blind (minor wear to joints). Provenance : J.L. Gardiner, East Hampton (signature on each title and ownership inscription on front free endpaper in each volume: "J.L. Gardiner's.--East Hampton April 23, 1788). FIRST AMERICAN EDITION. It was preceded by a John Newbery edition in 1763. EXTREMELY RARE: all recorded copies have fewer plates and/or lack volumes. Evans 13205 (volume II only); Rosenbach, Early American Children's Books 76 (volume II only); Shipton & Mooney 13205 (listing 11 plates in the AAS copy); Welch, American Children's Books 226; Welsh 2003.
