CHAUMETON, François Pierre (1775-1819), Jean Baptiste Joseph Anne César Tyrbas de CHAMBERET (1779-1832) and Pierre Jean François TURPIN (1775-1840). Flore usuelle Recueil de toutes les plantes usitées dans les sciences, les beaux-arts, les arts mécaniques, la médecine et la pharmacie. Paris: C.L.F. Panckoucke, [c.1820-1831]. 8 volumes, 4° (288 x 216mm). Half-titles, 2pp. prospectus bound after titles of vol.I and vol.VI. 424 stipple-engraved plates, printed in colours and finished by hand, after P.J.F. Turpin and Anne-Ernestine Panckoucke one folding, one uncoloured engraved table, extra-illustrated with a duplicate of plate 86 and a slight variant of its 2 leaves of letterpress explanatory text. (Occasional light spotting.) Contemporary green morocco gilt by J. Mackenzie, covers with multiple-fillet border, spine in six compartments with raised bands, lettered in the second, the third with volume number within shaped panel surrounded by arabesque ornament, the others with elaborate overall repeat pattern of massed arabesque tooling, gilt turn-ins, yellow-glazed endpapers, some free endpapers with watermark date '1831', gilt edges (slight discolouration to covers). A VERY FINE SET OF AN APPARENTLY UNRECORDED VARIANT OF CHAUMETON'S FLORE MéDICALE: the larger quarto issue which shows Turpin and Madame Panckoucke's delightful plates to their best advantage. This work should more properly be seen as a later issue of Flore médicale rather than a separate work: it does not include the preliminary text found with the former, but, apart from the titles, this seems to be the only major difference. It is recorded that the Flore médicale was also available as part of the 60-volume Dictionaire des sciences médicales (1812-1822). The present issue, with the medically-biased preliminary matter removed, is aimed at a much wider audience than either of the two earlier issues: the Sciences, Domestic Economy, the Fine Arts, the mechanical arts, as well as medicine and pharmacy. The final two volumes, although evidently intended to form part of the present eight-volume work, are distinct from vols I-VI and were also issued as a separate work. They are by J.L. Poiret and J. Turpin and are titled ['Leçons de Flore'] and 'Essai d'une Iconographie... des Végétaux'. Not recorded in any of the standard bibliographies, but for details of Flore médicale see: Dunthorne 78; Great Flower Books (1990) p.87; Cleveland Collections 782; Nissen BBI 349. (8)
