Château Lagrange--Vintage 1928

THE 1928 VINTAGE IN BORDEAUX ***** "The first of the famous twin vintages; both great but of totally contrasting weight and style. What produced these massively tannic wines? Summer heat thickened the skins from which were extracted deep colouring matter and tannin. The exceptionally good ripening conditions were responsible for the richness and substantial alcohol content. This is the longest lived vintage of the decade. Because they came on to the market just before the slump, large quantities remained unsold. Stocks remained in some merchants' cellars until well after World War Two and were on merchants' lists even in the mid 1950s, which is one of the reasons I have so many notes, almost 200, for I tasted quite a lot in my early retailing days, from 1953-1959. The rest of my notes, indeed most, were made during my time at Christie's, from 1966, and at many tastings. *****" MB, Vintage Wine Château Lagrange Château Lagrange has had its ups and downs over the years. Its current incarnation is a return to former glory. Since 1983 Château Lagrange has been owned by the largest wine and spirits company in Japan: Suntory. Overcoming some apprehension about foreign investment (nevermind that Suntory was purchasing the property from the Cendoyas, a Spanish family from Basque country), Suntory enlisted the help or Emile Peynaud and Michel Delon (of Léoville-las-Cases fame), as well expert oenologist Michel Ducasse. Since then, Château Lagrange has regained the troisième cru status it deserves. Château Lagrange is often thought of as château that has had its fair share of financial (and hence winemaking) trouble over the course of the 20th-century. However, the wine being offered in this sale, 6 bottles of the 1928 Château Lagrange come from another golden age of the château. From 1842 to 1875, Château Lagrange was at its best. Under the leadership of Comte Duchatel, the vineyards and the château itself increased in size, splendor and value. Drainage was improved with a then-revolutionary system of underground earthenware pipes, the first of their nature in Bordeaux. In 1875 it was sold to Louis Mouicy and then in 1925 to Manuel Cendoya. The leadership of the Cendoya family eventually led to the decline of this great château, but in 1928, the wines were still being made with the intensity and care that they are, once again, today.
