Chateau Haut-Brion 1989 Chateau Haut-Brion 1989 Pessac-Leognan (Graves), 1er Cru Classe Lots 8070-8071: New labels At a 2012 dinner where its great youthful bloom was still much in evidence, full of intense black fruit and exciting variations on the themes of tapenade and peat. But this is all about ripe berries and luscious texture, a wine both for now and for decades into the future. Magnums are even more concentrated, packing a real punch. In 2013, in Cambridge for the 350th anniversary of Pepys naming Haut-Brion in his diary, it had huge, glorious impact. Serena Sutcliffe, MW. See illustration Lot 8072 3 d.mag - 3 liters (owc) per lot: HKD 120000-200000 per lot: USD 16000-25000 My overriding impression of this stunning First Growth is that it is the silkiest, most perfumed, most fine-grained of all the legendary top chateaux of Bordeaux. Haut-Brion has an inner 'spirituality' to it, a haunting quality that lingers long on the senses. Its unique position on the edge of the city of Bordeaux gives it a micro-climate that fosters ripeness and generosity ? there is a velvety warmth to the wine. The extra 'plus' to the property is the family ownership and its long-standing link with three generations of another family, the Delmas, on the managing side which has provided a totally beneficial continuity to the estate. Haut-Brion often blooms early among the First Growths but, unlike human beings, it continues to grow more beautiful in middle age and retains the bone structure and elegance of a very distinguished old age! Serena Sutcliffe, MW. Area Planted: 48 hectares, 35 ares Vineyard Composition: Cabernet Sauvignon 43.9% Merlot 45.4% Cabernet Franc 9.7% Petit Verdot 1.0% Age of Vines: 36 years(average) Geology: Gravel soil with a subsoil of clay and sand Rootstock: 420A, 3309, Riparia Harvest: By hand and sorted in the vineyard Vinification: Fermented at an average temperature of 30C Degrees (86F) in 225hl stainless steel vats with computer regulated temperature control and pumping over Ageing: 80% new barrels for an average of 18-22 months and fined with egg whites Production: 8000-12000 cases Quantity: 1
