Accompanied by an outdoor view of a group posed outside a tipi. Delegates identified in the negatives include: Standing Bear, a chief who successfully argued in US District Court that Native Americans are "persons within the meaning of the law" and have the right of habeas corpus; Hairy Bear; He Dog; American Horse, a Sioux chief who opposed Crazy Horse during the Great Sioux War of 1876-1877 and the Ghost Dance Movement of 1890; Black Crow; the son of Little Bear and chief of the Poncas, White Eagle; and Big Snake. Provenance: John Painter Collection of American Indian & Western Photography Condition: Some fading of the images and a fold on one of the photographs.
