CHAMBERS, Sir William (1726-1796). Designs of Chinese Buildings, Furniture, Dresses, Machines, and Utensils. London: for the Author, Messrs. Dodsley, etc., 1757. 2° (540 x 366mm). Titles and text in French and English. 21 engraved plates by P. Fourdrinier (13), C. Grignon (3), P. Sandby (1) and others. Contemporary light brown calf gilt, the covers with stained wavy lines, simple dog-tooth border, surrounding central arabesque made up of various small tools, spine in eight compartments with raised bands, red morocco lettering-piece in one, the others gilt (upper cover with section of leather torn away, spine chipped with light damage to joints). Provenance : Charles Edward Lefroy (Jane Austen's brother-in-law's brother, armorial bookplate for Itchel Manor, near Farnham, Surrey, and inscription, dated 1823, noting the book's previous owners: Anthony Lefroy; Isaac Peter George Lefroy; John Henry George Lefroy). FIRST EDITION with an interesting provenance. Cf. Harris 113; cf. Fowler 85 (French text); Colas 592 (with parallel French and English title and text).
