Contemporary light brown calf gilt, the covers with stained wavy lines, simple dog-tooth border, surrounding central arabesque made up of various small tools, spine in eight compartments with raised bands, red morocco lettering-piece in one, the others gilt (upper cover with section of leather torn away, spine chipped with light damage to joints). Provenance : Charles Edward Lefroy (Jane Austen's brother-in-law's brother, armorial bookplate for Itchel Manor, near Farnham, Surrey, and inscription, dated 1823, noting the book's previous owners: Anthony Lefroy; Isaac Peter George Lefroy; John Henry George Lefroy).
