Atop the Brandenburg Gate, Berlin, April 1945. Printed 1990s. Gelatin silver print. 27 x 39 cm (31 x 40,1 cm). Signed by the photographer in pencil on the verso. Referring to this image Chaldej once remarked: "I spent a long time looking for the right composition for this shot, just like I did for all the others. The officer was standing on one of the horses and I said, 'No, that's not good. Come down.' Then it all fell into place ... with the Reichstag there, the horse in the background and the flag". – Some handling marks, light vertical stain along both side edges (probably red crayon layout marks which were wiped away), a few small retouched spots, a few light surface scratches. Lit.: Ernst Volland/Heinz Krimmer (eds.). Von Moskau nach Berlin. Bilder des russischen Fotografen Jewgeni Chaldej. Berlin 1999, ill. p. 72. Published in: Spiegel No. 13, 1995, p. 19.
