Unbound, as issued, in original wrappers, with two pasteboard chemises within a single pasteboard slipcase (the chemises and slipcase lightly soiled). Edition limited to 368 copies, this number 123 of 285 copies, signed by the artist. The first of three books illustrated by Chagall for Ambroise Vollard, but left unpublished at the time of Vollard's death in 1939. The project was completed by Tériade in 1948, using 96 of Chagall's original 100 etchings. The missing plates are nos. I, II, VII, XVII, XX, XXII, XXV, XXX, XXXI, XXXV, XXXVII quater, XXXVIII, XXXIX, XLVII, LIV, XLVIII, LV bis, LV, LVII, LVIII, LXV, LXXII.
