CHAGALL, Marc. - Nikolai Vasil'evich GOGOL (1809-1852). Les Ames Mortes. Translated by Henri Mongault. Paris: Tériade, 1948. 2 volumes, 2° (378 x 281mm). 74 etched plates only (of 96), (some with additional drypoint, roulette and aquatint) variously signed in the plate "Chagall", "Marc Chagall" or "M.Chagall", 11 etched headpieces, 11 etched initials and an illustrated register of the etchings on 11 plates, all by Chagall. Unbound, as issued, in original wrappers, with two pasteboard chemises within a single pasteboard slipcase (the chemises and slipcase lightly soiled). Edition limited to 368 copies, this number 123 of 285 copies, signed by the artist. The first of three books illustrated by Chagall for Ambroise Vollard, but left unpublished at the time of Vollard's death in 1939. The project was completed by Tériade in 1948, using 96 of Chagall's original 100 etchings. The missing plates are nos. I, II, VII, XVII, XX, XXII, XXV, XXX, XXXI, XXXV, XXXVII quater, XXXVIII, XXXIX, XLVII, LIV, XLVIII, LV bis, LV, LVII, LVIII, LXV, LXXII.
