In 1885, he went to Persia as a tutor and was attached to a Swedish-Norwegian embassy to the Shah in 1890. He made many journeys into uncharted areas, particularly in the Himalayas (1893-1898), the Gobi Desert, and Tibet. His accounts contain much information on the local peoples' way of life and numerous black-and-white photo plates, taken by Hedin, as well as reproductions of some of his sketches. With the armorial bookplate of George A.P.H. Duncan Lot Amendments Condition: Light wear to cloth with rubbing to extremities, some fading and discoloration to spines; map at rear of volume 2 detached but present, with tear at margin not affecting actual map, vol.2 rear hinge cracked, edge wear to map at rear, scattered light foxing; very good.
