Late 19th-century cloth (lacks backstrip). Provenance : Geological Society (presentation inscription by the author, presentation slip pasted to verso of title, old ink stamps). FIRST EDITION, PRESENTATION COPY inscribed by Cautley on title: "From Col. Sir Proby T. Cautley with Complements." The Ganges Canal, consived by John Russell Colvin in 1836, was built by Cautley between 1842 and 1854. The main canal is 445 miles long, connecting Haridwar to Cawnpore, with a long branch to Hamirpur on the Jumna. It was the longest navigational canal built up to that time.
