Speculum regiminis. [Basel: Michael Wenssler, c.1486-87.] An important Latin textbook in a contemporary binding. Philippus of Bergamo's treatise actually constitutes most of the book and is really an original work rather than just a commentary on Cato. ISTC records only one other copy of this edition in the United States and it does not seem to have ever appeared at auction. Large initial with green tessellated infill, red and blue Lombard initials, red capital strokes (many deletions in printed text as well as manuscript shoulder notes, a few small patch repairs, first leaf heavily soiled and repaired, a few stains, including ink stain which has caused burn through text area, two leaves with repairs at gutter, dampstaining). Contemporary blindstamped calf over wooden boards, bosses, brass catchplates and clasps, paper label on front board, remains of vellum manuscript leaves reused as pastedowns, leather index tabs (joints showing but sturdy, boards worn).
