London: Published by F. Catherwood, 1844. Folio (535 x 360 mm). Chromolithographed title page with mosaic border by Owen Jones in blue, red and gold. Outline map and 25 tinted lithographic plates on heavy stock paper. Publisher's green morocco backed cloth, upper cover and spine lettered in gilt. Condition: moderate foxing to 4 four plates and title, dampstaining at the upper outer edge of title page and first 5 plates, else light foxing and fingersoiling; covers spotted, light edge and cornerwear, rear cover with a few scratches. first edition, one of 300 copies. Frederick Catherwood joined John Lloyd Stephens (1805-1852) on two journeys through central America and the Yucatan between 1839 and 1841. Stephens published two works with views by Catherwood in 1841 and 1843 which were very popular and inspired Catherwood to publish his 1844 Views. Limited to 300 copies, the folio edition was sold in both colored and uncolored versions. The plates depicts monuments in Tulum, Palenque, Uxmal, Las Monjas, Chichen Itza as well as aspects of Mayan life. Hill p.47; Palau 50290; Sabin 11520; Tooley 133; Von Hagen Search for the Maya.
