Beschreibung:

Catharina Lintheimer An album of original watercolour drawings of flowers and fruit, [?Holland:] c. 1714-1741. 2° (330 x 208mm. and smaller). 317 original pencil and watercolour drawings on 317 leaves., 277 signed by Lintheimer and dated (most on the verso), 22 with variety names given in Dutch. (First two drawings browned, occasional light spotting.) Modern green morocco, spine in six compartments tooled in gilt, titled in gilt 'Flower Drawings 1714-1741' in the second compartment. A FINE EXAMPLE OF AN EARLY 18TH-CENTURY ALBUM BY A GIFTED AMATEUR GIVING A YEAR-ON-YEAR RECORD OF THE FLOWERING OF A PRIVATE GARDEN IN HOLLAND. The album includes drawings of numerous examples of Roses, Iris, Tulips, Pinks and/or Carnations, Convolvulus, Auriculas, Ranunculus, Poppies together with some examples of Jonquil, Narcissi, Lupin, Viola, Anemone, Aquilegia, Passion Flower, Periwinkle, Geranium, Fritillary and others. Also included is one drawing of a caterpillar, and 37 of fruit and vegetables (i.e. Apples [5], Pears [6], Plums [9] together with examples of Pumpkins, Citrus fruit, Grapes and others). The collection includes 8 drawings from 1714, and ends with 40 undated drawings. In between Catharina Lintheimer produced drawings every year between 1723 and 1741 (except 1739). The most productive years, which each resulted in a similar number of drawings, were between 1723 and 1729, 1731, 1732 and 1734. By cross-referencing the annual repetition of certain varieties a view emerges of a garden that would look familar to the modern horticulturalist, in terms of plants if not in the way they were displayed. It contained a wide selection of roses (probably both rambling and bush varieties), beds containing a succession of seasonal flowers (Auriculas, Jonquil, Narcissus, Tulips, Aquilegia, etc.), an area for fruit trees, a hothouse for fruit, vegetables and some of the more exotic flowers (Morning Glory, Cacti, etc). The drawings are clearly all taken from life and at their best display a fine delicacy of touch, an understanding of the structure of the subject and an excellent eye for colour and design. The artist appears to be working within a tradition established by the early manuscript florilegia, and continued by the great published works such as Besler's Hortus Eystattensis , where a record is given of plants flowering in a single garden. Generally this was limited to the flowers grown in a single year, the present work is unusual (and therefore particularly valuable) in that it provides a picture of what was grown for 18 years, with a detailed picture for ten years. This demonstrates to a degree the changing fashions in gardening and also new introductions: Ranunculus figure prominently, and examples of Gerbora and Nolana are also included, both of which would have been relatively recent introductions.
