Frontispiece portrait and 16 plates, 3 folding coloured maps, photographic illustrations throughout. (Folding map with short tear and light creasing.) Black half morocco, top edge gilt (upper joints rubbed and cracked, spine faded). Provenance : C.W.M. Swithinbank (stamp). FIRST EDITION. An account of the expedition of the Southern Cross to determine the location of the Southern Magnetic Pole. Provenance : C.W.M. Swithinbank (stamp). AUTHOR'S SIGNED EDITION, NO. 205 OF 1,000 COPIES. Acknowledged by many to be first to discover the North Pole in 1908, Dr. Frederick Albert Cook spent two decades exploring the polar regions.
