CARDIM, Antonio Francisco. Fasciculus e Iapponicis floribus, suo adhuc madentibus sanguine . Rome: Heirs of Corbelletti, 1646. 3 parts in 1 volume, 4° (190 x 136mm). 86 engraved plates of Jesuit martyrs (only, of 87), woodcut head- and tailpieces. (Lacking engraved plate of St. Franciscus Xaverius and the map of Japan, neat repair to outer margin of plate 7, occasional marginal staining.) Contemporary mottled sheep, spine gilt in five compartments, lettered in one (a few wormholes at base of spine). Provenance : Po. Cardozo (signature); the library of the Convent of Discalced Augustinians at Monte Olivete (armorial stamps on title and B4, inscriptions). An interesting group of three pamphlets, issued together, eulogising and listing the Jesuit martyrs who died in Japan. The first work is illustrated with a plate of each martyr suffering death: the second and third works ( Catalogus regularium et secularium qui in Iapponiae Regnis . . . ab ethnicis in odium Christianae Fidei . . . violenta morte sublati sunt and Mors Felicissima quatuor legatorum lusitanorum et sociorum quos Iapponiae Imperator occidit ) list the names and stories of further martyrs. Bibliographischer Alt-Japan-Katalog 1542-1853 , Kyoto: 1940, nos. 275 (only 3 copies in Japan); 274 and 276 (no copies of these two pamphlets are recorded in Japan, and only 6 in Germany).
