CAMPBELL, Colen (1676-1729), John WOOLF (d.1793) and James GANDON (1743-1823). Vitruvius Britannicus, or The British Architect, Containing the plans, elevations, and sections of the regular buildings, both publick and private, in Great Britain. [London: 1751?]-1767-1771. 5 volumes, 2° (550 x 375mm). Text in French and English. Engraved titles in French and English, 4 dedication leaves, 385 plates (16 folding, 80 double-page). (Occasional spotting or browning.) Contemporary tree-calf (neatly rebacked and cornered). Provenance : Mathew Lewis (armorial bookplate); Lord W. Kerr (book-label). A FINE SET, with first editions of the supplementary fourth and fifth volumes. The first three volumes, by Campbell, originally appeared between 1715 and 1725. The tentative date of 1751 for the present reprint is based on the announcement in the General Advertiser for 14-17 January: "This Day is Published, In Three Volumes, Folio, Vitruvius Britannicus...". Stocks of this reprint were apparently still large enough to satisfy the increased demand occasioned by the appearance (through different publishers) of Woolf & Gandon's supplementary volumes between 1765 (the first part of vol.IV appeared on 27 March) and 1771. Harris 103 & 945; Berlin Kat. 2329. (5)
