CAMPANELLA, Tommaso (1568-1639). De libris propriis & recta ratione studendi syntagma . [Edited by Gabriel Naudé (1600-53).] Paris: widow of Guillaume Pelé, 1642, 8 o (168 x 104 mm). (Lacking final blank.) Nineteenth-century half calf (inner hinges reinforced, a bit rubbed). Provenance : George H. Powell (signature dated 1896 on front free endpaper); tenth Duke of Devonshire, Chatsworth Library (bookplate, sale Christie's London, 24 February 1982, lot 512). FIRST EDITION of Campanella's auto-bio-bibliography. He wrote the book at the end of his life, finally at liberty after twenty-seven years imprisonment and living at Paris. He dictated the work to Gabriel Naudé, whose repeated urgings had prompted him to record details of his life and writings.
