Lot of 10 silver gelatin photographs documenting the construction of Camp Jackson, South Carolina, established in 1917 as the United States entered World War I. Many are numbered and dated in the negative, with some credited to photographer Walter F. Blanchard (American, ca 1874-?). Featured is an image, 10 x 8 in., showing several African Americans with shovels, standing alongside a team of mules, with "#125 Aug. 18th" written in the negative and "2nd Brigade / Road & Pipe Line / Looking West" inscribed on verso. Remaining nine photographs, ranging in size from approx. 26.75 x 7.75 in. to 38 x 10 in., present panoramic views from August and September of 1917 during the first phase of building. Among the highlights are scenes of construction captured from a cleared field, with an automobile and wagons in the middle distance and two riders in the foreground with "#115 Aug 10th 1917 / Blanchard Photo" written in the negative and "Supply Train & Light Artillery / Looking East" inscribed on verso; a second eastern-facing view of barracks for enlisted men of the 1st Brigade Artillery with several wagons and carts traversing the foreground, dated "Aug 18th #130"; a remarkably composed scene of African American workers pouring concrete to fill a basin-like structure with a multitude of additional construction workers dotting the middle distance and "Sept. 5th #178" written in the negative; and a bird's eye view of several housing units still under construction with piles of timber strewn throughout, dated in the negative "Aug 24th #172." Plans for Camp Jackson called for the construction of sixteen National Army cantonments, each consisting of approximately 1,700 buildings. The vast majority of these buildings were designated as accommodations, both officers' quarters and barracks for enlisted men. Other structures included storehouses, mess halls, a base hospital, a Red Cross House, a theatre, a library, a Y.M.C.A., a fire department and observation tower, laundry facilities, a bakery, a remount station, a motor transportation field, and several post exchanges. Condition: Condition varies and includes brittleness, creasing, toning, and light surface soil.
