CALVIN, JEAN. Institution de la religion Chrestienne: composee en latin par Iean Calvin, & translatée en Françoys par luymesme, & puis de nouveau reveuë & augmentée. Geneva: Jean Gérard, 20 October 1551. Folio, 266 x 165 mm. (10 7/16 x 6 9/16 in.), lacquered brown calf, covers with Grolieresque design of slightly embossed interlacing black-painted strapwork outlined in silver-tooling and -dotting, silver-tooled fleurons and small star tools in interstices, central oval cartouche with a semis of silver dots and orange-painted strapwork frame around silver lettering, spine with same tools in silver, the design built up in the nineteenth or early twentieth century [possibly by René Hagué?] over the original sixteenth-century binding, recapped and rejointed, edges gilt and gauffred (in the sixteenth century) to a floral and strapwork design, a few short marginal tears, occasional marginal staining or soiling, a few passages underlined in ink . RULED IN RED THROUGHOUT. Collation: a-z6 A-Z6 aa-ii6 kk-pp4 qq6. 360 leaves (including final blank), roman type, printer's woodcut device on title, four-line criblé initials. EXCEEDINGLY RARE EARLY EDITION OF "THE MOST IMPORTANT DOCTRINAL WORK OF THE REFORMATION AS A WHOLE (PMM). Calvin published the first edition of the Institutio Christianae religionis in 1536, when he was only 26; although its fundamental points remained unaltered, he revised details of the text throughout several later editions, the definitive version appearing in 1559. In 1541 he published his own French translation, "and thereby created one of the finest early prose writings in the language" ( op. cit. ). All of the early French editions are rare: the Bibliothèque Nationale contains none earlier than 1554, and the earliest editions in NUC, the British Library, and the Cambridge libraries are dated respectively 1553, 1561, and 1566. PMM 65 (first Latin edition); not in Adams, BM/STC French , BN Catalogue des Imprimés , Brunet, Rothschild. Provenance : Unidentified lithographed bookplate, monogram GES, motto "mente libera".
