CALLIGRAPHIC MANUSCRIPT -- Prières pour dire le matin pendant la Sainte Messe et pour le soir . Manuscript on paper executed for Marie de Béchameil, marquise de Maillebois, by Louis Senault or one of his followers. [Paris]: 1713. 145 x 96mm, 60 leaves, the last blank, written in grey/black ink in a very fine upright bold roman script, liturgical directions in italics, each page within a decorative pen-and-ink border, title within an architectural border incorporating the marquise's and her husband's arms, on two shields supported by putti, above three putti holding the Cross; three large headpieces in pen-and-ink (on ff 3, 11 and 46) of a kneeling man receiving the Host from an angel, the Last Supper and the Agony in the Garden; two tailpieces and two historiated initials, TWO FULL-PAGE DRAWINGS (on ff10v and 45v) of Moses directing the Israelites to gather Manna, and of the Holy Spirit rising from the flames while an angel tries to quench the fire. (Occasional minor staining.) CONTEMPORARY INLAID MOSAÏQUÉ BINDING BY PIERRE-ANTOINE PADELOUP LE JEUNE, red morocco gilt, sides with inlays of olive and ochre morocco: a border of four panels diapered in gilt, in the corners rayed wheels, surrounding a large inlaid oval centrepiece with large inset rosettes; spine with five raised bands, olive morocco lettering piece, other compartments with small tools, two in silver now oxidized; doublures of olive morocco, inner dentelle border; gilt edges. In leather-lined half morocco chemise and lined slipcase. Provenance : M.L. Schiff (booklabel, sold Sotheby's 25 March 1938, lot 484) -- Major J.R.Abbey (booklabel, acquisition mark JA 1679 and date of acquisition 25.3.1938, not in his sale) -- AWF (booklabel). A very fine binding by Antoine-Michel Padeloup, le jeune (1685-1758), the outstanding French master of the early 18th century. He established his first atelier in 1712 and this must be one of his earliest mosaïqué bindings. There can be no doubt about the attribution, one of his bindings with an identical border and cornerpieces is reproduced in the Esmerian Catalogue vol.II no.87; there is also an explanation of the rayed wheel tooling peculiar to Padeloup in L.-M.Michon, Les reliures mosaïquées du XVIIIe siècle, 1956, p.26. The calligraphy and the fine drawings are very reminiscent of Louis Senault, a writing master of whom very little is known. He produced calligraphic devotional manuscripts in the tradition of Jarry, including one Heures Nouvelles dediées a Madame la Dauphine , which he also subsequently engraved. Cf. J.I.Whalley, The Pen's Excellence , 1980, p.200. This book was commissioned by Marie Béchameil, who was married to Nicolas Demaretz, marquis de Maillebois (1648-1721), a nephew of Colbert, by whom she had eleven children; the arms of both are on the title.
