Title: California Jockey Club & Pacific Coast Jockey Club advertising broadside Author: Place: No place Publisher: Date: [1898] Description: Chromolithographed broadside, 58x44 cm (17¼x22¾"), archivally matted and framed under UV resistant glass.. Rare and striking color lithograph depicting two horse racing scenes, at Oakland race track and at the Ingleside race track in San Francisco. There are medallions with portraits of officials from each track, Col. Dan M. Burns, Thomas H. Williams, Robert B. Milroy (three from Oakland) and Henry L. Crocker, Malor S.N. Androus, F.H. Green (three from Ingleside). The Ingleside Race Track opened in November of 1896 just off what is now Ocean Avenue in San Francisco. The track was built with a sumptuous clubhouse, a fine viewing stand and, for the horses, one of the best stables to be found. The Southern Pacific Railroad built a special line delivering people to the front doors, In the early 20th century auto racing took place at Ingleside, and after business declined the California Jockey Club took over the track and promised new races. But it was not to be. The last horse race was in 1905 and the track closed and served as a refugee camp for many San Franciscans after the 1906 earthquake. In 1910 it was bought and developed into the Ingleside Terraces residential area which exists today. On the reverse are printed advertisements, including the A. Schilling & Co. Only one example of the present lithograph is listed in OCLC/WorldCat, at Stanford University. Handsomely framed. Due to the size and/or weight of this lot extra charges may apply. Lot Amendments Condition: Expertly restored repairing a few tears, hints of old folds. Item number: 273422
