Lot of 8 photographs ranging in size from 2.25 x 3.25 in. to 6.5 x 8.5 in., all but one on larger cardstock mounts. A fine selection of formal studio portraits and snapshots of individual musicians, duos, and trios, most strumming banjos. The lot includes two cyanotypes, each approx. 3.5 x 3.5 in. or larger, of musicians, one showing a man seated next to a woman playing her banjo, the other showing a young boy playing his banjo on the front porch of a home. Two large format photos of note show three-piece bands, including a 4.75 x 7 in. silver gelatin photograph on 7 x 9 in. mount of an aged gentleman, presumably a father, seated at a drum painted with "Mandolin Club. 'Fondy,'" with two young boys, likely his sons, each strumming banjos (print near excellent, crease in mount near lower right corner); and a 6.5 x 8.5 in. silver gelatin photograph on 10 x 12 in. mount showing a group of three men seated in a studio, two holding banjos, with crossed banjos in front of them, the third holding a guitar (light toning to print, wear to mount, including some light staining/loss at corners/edges). The lot also includes a 6 x 8 in. photograph on 7 x 9 in. mount of a large group of people gathered together in an outdoor setting, including what appears to be a minister at center, and a young man in the front row, center, playing his banjo (toning, scattered spots on print, wear/loss to mount). Provenance: Steve Roden Collection: Music in Vernacular Photographs Condition: Range in condition (with some specific issues noted above). Some with light, scattered spotting. Some with corner/edge wear to mount.
