(Without blank d6). Early 19th-century diced russia tooled in gilt and blind, g.e. Provenance : George Herbert (1785-1848), 2nd Earl of Powis (name on front flyleaf); engraved arms with motto 'Furth fortune and fill the fetters' mounted on front pastedown. FIRST EDITION, and a rare, elegantly printed, publication of the short-lived Academia Veneta, also known as the Accademia della Fama. Founded in 1558 with Paolo Manuzio as director of its press, the Academia had an ambitious publishing programme, but both the society and its publications ceased after 1561. Despite its print-run of 1100 copies, this edition of Butigella's commentary on the Codex is 'fort rare et presque inconnu' (Renouard). The present copy once formed part of the celebrated Powis collection of Aldines, sold as one lot at auction to 1923 to Quaritch, and subsequently dispersed by catalogue. Adams B-3360 (with slightly different collation); Renouard, Alde , 271:7.
