Beschreibung:

BURTON, Richard Francis The Land of Midian Revisited . London: C. Kegan Paul, 1879. 2 volumes, 8° (226 x 149mm). Folding map, 16 plates, 32-page publisher's catalogue in Vol. I. (Frontispiece in Volume II. loose). Original yellow-ochre cloth gilt with bevelled edges, covers lettered in gilt and illustrated in black, spines ruled in gilt and black. Provenance : Maria Stisted. (inscription for the author) A FINE COPY OF THE FIRST EDITION, A PRESENTATION COPY FROM THE AUTHOR TO HIS SISTER, inscribed 'To my dearest Sister' on Vol. I half-title. Burton dedicated the work to his niece Maria Stisted, sister of Georgiana and daughter of his sister Maria, who had died in November 1878, age 30. On that date Burton was still in the Midian on what became a geographically more important expedition than his journey to Mecca. He mapped a 600-mile route through the northern and southern Midian recording its ruined ancient cities. For the Khedive in Cairo he brought back twenty-five tons of minerals to be assayed. For himself, he seriously considered forming a company to exploit the oil resources of the Midian but nothing came of it. 1000 copies only were printed. Penzer p. 96-97. Casada 44. Spink 61. Kirkpatrick 64. (2)
