Vues Pittoresques de la République Argentine XIV planches avec 36 [sic.] figures, dessinées la plupart d'apès nature et accompagnées de descriptions … traduit de l'Allemand avec le concours de Émile Daireaux.
Buenos Aires, Paris and Halle: Paul-Émile Coni, F. Savy and Ed. Anton, 1881. Large oblong folio (578 x 758 mm). Letterpress title, 6 leaves of text. 37 views on 14 lithographic plates (7 plates tinted, 7 colour-printed and finished by hand or hand-coloured) by W. Loeillot (9), Carl Muller (4) and 1 unsigned, after Burmeister (12), A. Methfessel (6), A. Göring (8), 10 after photographs and 1 a joint effort by Burmeister and Göring. Unbound as issued within original paper-covered boards, large paper title label on upper cover. Condition : expertly rebacked to style in brown cloth. a fine copy of this very rare album of views of the argentine. The last copy of this very fine album to be listed as having sold at auction was in 1980. The locations vary as much as the country itself: from the architecture of Buenos Aires, Cordova and Mendoza, to the lush forest of Tucuman, the landscape of Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego and back to the Rio Paraná. The plates include multiple images (from two to five to a plate) and are numbered from 1-20, 21A, 21B, 22-36. Ten of the images are taken from photographs by Labat and other unnamed photographers in Buenos Aires. The remainder are from artist's sketches by the author, his assistant A. Göring, and a professional artist Adolf Methfessel (1836-1909). Burmeister describes Methfessel as "un jeune peinte suisse … qui m'a fourni quelques peintures dont je n'ai qu'à louer la bonne exécution." Methfessel later spent time in San Francisco (from 1901-1906). The person responsible for each image is identified in the descriptive text if their names are not given on the plate. The work was issued as part of a larger work with the general title Description physique de la République Argentine d'après des observations personelles et étrangères (Buenos Aires, etc.: 1876-1886). This larger work was never completed but includes 4 octavo text volumes (volumes 1-3 and 5, as volume 4 was never published), the present atlas, and another four "atlas" parts (published in quarto and folio) that included text and plates on mammals and butterflies. Cf. BM (NH) I, p.290; cf. Nissen ZBI 760
