BROWNING, Robert (1812-1889). Two autograph letters signed, the first ('R. Browning') to [Eliot] Warburton, New Cross, Hatcham, 28 November [1845], 2 pages, small 8vo , integral blank; the second ('Robert Browning') to Mrs Trevelyan, 19 Warwick Crescent, 8 December [18]79, one page, 8vo (integral leaf removed). Browning's letter to Eliot Warburton, the Irish traveller and novelist, is a warm acknowledgment of a kindness, probably referring to the latter's reply when Browning sent on to him 'Landor's generous lines... Your letter of praise and encouragement was the first notice I received -- and with such incentives to well-doing there is but little danger of my ceasing to work cheerfully on whatever be the fruit of the endeavour'. Walter Savage Landor had written on receiving from Browning a copy of his newly published Dramatic Romances and Warburton had sent an earlier letter, on receiving the proof sheets from the publisher. The second letter (to the wife of his old friend, the historian and statesman, George Otto Trevelyan) is a refusal, 'I am always most unlucky in always being unable to avail myself of your kind invitations', with further friendly remarks.
