BROWN, Peter. New Illustrations of Zoology, containing fifty coloured plates of new, curious, and non-descript birds, with a few quadrupeds, reptiles and insects. London: for B.White, 1776. 4° (284 x 228mm). Parallel titles and text in English and French. 50 hand-coloured engraved plates by and after Brown. (Small tear to outer margin of English title, small tears to margins of plate XI.) Early-19th-century black half morocco gilt, g.e. (title rubbed, small tear to lower joint). Provenance : James L.Drummond, M.D. (Royal Belfast Institution, book-label). FIRST EDITION. Based on specimens in the natural history collections of Marmaduke Tunstall, Thomas Pennant and others, Brown's work was intended as a sort of supplement to George Edwards's A Natural History of Uncommon Birds . Much of the text was supplied by Pennant, who had previously employed Brown for two of the plates in his British Zoology . Brown, a Dane by birth, was also known as a flower painter, exhibiting at the Royal Academy from 1770 to 1791. Anker 72; Zimmer p.101; Fine Bird Books p.62; Nissen IVB 151.
