Lyon: Benoist Rigaud, 1574. Extremely rare edition on the planting and grafting of trees . According to Brunet, there was an edition printed in Paris by Jean Bonfons in 1562. The first chapter deals with the planting and pruning of orchards (apple trees, pear trees, etc.) The second chapter describes the method of grafting wild branches upon trees with woodcut. The later chapters deal with the planting and grafting of walnut trees, the upkeep of trees; followed by a short treatise on the planting and cultivating of herbs. Included near the end is a small section on the pine tree illustrated with a woodcut. Extremely rare: USTC locates only one copy of this edition at the BN; no copy appears in ABPC or online auction records , nor in the standard references for botanical books, or Baurdrier’s Bibliographie Lyonnaise. See Brunet III: 1366 (Paris Bonfons 1562 [i.e. 1552?] edition); USTC 61655. Brossard was a member of the clergy in the Abbey of St. Vincent at Le Mans and lived during the mid-16th century. He wrote three treatises on agriculture and agronomy. According to A. Dupetit-Thomas in the Biographie Universelle : “This book, in spite of its briefness, is very remarkable. It distinguishes itself not only among those which existed at this time, but also among those which appeared a long time thereafter, because the author, instead of searching in the writings of the ancients, has deducted the principles of arbor-culture from his own experience.” This edition was preceded by a Lyon edition of 1543 (Arnoullet) and two Orléans editions (1571 and 1572), and four Paris editions (1552 [two editions], 1563 and 1568), all rare. 16mo (119 x 70 mm). Historiated woodcut title-border and 10 woodcuts in text. Full dark blue morocco gilt, edges gilt, by M. Godillot.
