BROOKSHAW, George (1751-1823). Pomona Britannica; or, a collection of the most esteemed fruits at present cultivated in this country. London: T. Bensley for Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme & Brown and John Lepard, [1816-]1817.
BROOKSHAW, George (1751-1823). Pomona Britannica; or, a collection of the most esteemed fruits at present cultivated in this country. London: T. Bensley for Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme & Brown and John Lepard, [1816-]1817. Large 4° (343 x 270mm). 60 stipple-engraved plates by G. Brookshaw, printed in colour and finished by hand. (Occasional spotting.) Contemporary green straight-grained half morocco, gilt spine, gilt edges (slightly sunned). Provenance : George Savile Foljambe (bookplate). A VERY FINE AND TALL COPY of the second edition of Brookshaw's Pomona . This edition is essentially a new work: the format was reduced from broadsheet to 4°, the plates were re-engraved by the author himself, their number reduced from 90 to 60, and the text was extensively re-worked. The resultant work has plates that are more realistic and useful, if less opulent, and includes details of 174 cultivars of 15 types of fruit. A 4pp. table at the end of vol. II lists the owners and locations of the gardens from which Brookshaw obtained his specimens. It is interesting to note that he had no need to travel any further from London than Bromley to obtain the various cultivars depicted. Dunthorne 51; Great Flower Books (1990) p.81; Nissen BBI 244.
