Beschreibung:

BRAVO, MANUEL ALVAREZ (1902-2002) [Parabola optica: Optical Parable, 1931] . Gelatin silver print dry mounted to card, image 9 5/16 x 7 3/4 inches (240 x 282 mm), signed in pencil on mount by Bravo (l.r.) and annotated "Mexico." Fine example, printed 1970 or early 1980s. As the J. Paul Getty Museum's description of this classic photograph states "...By flipping the negative and producing reversed text, Manuel Alvarez Bravo called into question the accuracy of vision. Images of the human eye reiterate the theme of looking. Although the name La Optica Moderna means "the modern optician's shop," Alvarez Bravo recognized that these words imply "the modern viewpoint." The photograph's title, Parabola optica, compounds this wordplay. Parabola both suggests the shape of something and alludes to parable, a story with multiple meanings. Alvarez Bravo thus crafted a modern parable about the shapes we see and the meanings we attach to them." Kismaric Manuel Alvarez Bravo p. 2; The J. Paul Getty Museum Manuel Ãlvarez Bravo plate 3; The Museum of Photographic Arts Revelaciones: The Art of Manuel Alvarez Bravo p. 64. C
